I'm running 7.0.1. I've been looking at a video and would like to do
some screen captures. I tried the "Capture Selection" command in the
Edit menu. I get a satisfying shutter sound but I cannot find a
resulting output file. Am I missing some important step? Seems like
the whole windw is selected by default (at least I see a flashing
dashed line surrounding the window.

The screen shot is sent to the clipboard, you should be able to paste
it into Word or a graphics program. You can't capture video though.
