Has anyone here run Ubuntu standard desktop Linux on
Virtual PC using Vista as a host OS? Did you encounter
any problems?

What problems are you encountering?

I haven't encountered ANY problems,yet, because I haven't done
this. I'm trying to anticipate problems to gauge the levels of
difficulty in various approaches that I have as options. Since no
one here apparently has had any experience with Ubuntu Server,
I thought I'd ask about Ubuntu Desktop. From various press
and newsgroup accounts, Virtual PC doesn't run Linux consistently
well (the implication being that Microsoft prefers it that way). But
since those accounts were with Ubuntu 7.04, I'm inquiring to find
out if the situation may be different with Ubuntu 7.10. Or, perhaps
that VPC 2007 runs better under Vista Business as a host than
under previous Windows OSes. (The physical machine has 3GB
of RAM and has a partition of size 120GB for Vista.)

Most all of those issues, I think all, actually, are related to Linux
and it's kernel and drivers...the mouse issue is a kernel bug, not a
VPC bug, the 24bit color is related to the linux driver not reading
the data from VPC's "hardware" saying it's not available. Or that
Ubuntu's "safe video mode" isn't and still defaults to 24bit color,
preventing a GUI install without modifications.

The host OS is really irrelevant to the VM and VPC. Neither really
care about the host OS.

Since what I need Linux for (shell commands and servers)
doesn't require a mouse and doesn't require accurate color,
can Ubuntu be installed "as is" without modification and run
adequately for my needs? If not, are these modifications difficult,
and are summarized in an online document?
Have these bugs in Ubuntu been corrected in v. 7.10?
I'd really like to use Virtual PC 2007, and the answers to
these questions would help a lot.

Without the GUI interface, you won't see the color issue, but the ps/2
mouse kernel bug could still show up.

I'm not sure. I haven't played around with 7.10. I don't recall any
recent posts here about it.

There have been a couple summaries posted on the web for Ubuntu, one
by Bo Berglund. If you search the newsgroup, I think he also posted
it here too.

Thanks. I'll do a search for it. (I'd read in one of the PC
magazines that Vista Home could run VPC.) Other than
the setup, then, Ubuntu 7.10 runs OK on Virtual PC 2007?

Tim
I have a Vista Home Premium system that is running VPC2007 with an Ubuntu
standard desktop
You need to install in text mode and then make a change for the colour depth
and the mouse. There is a useful document on the help.ubuntu.com/community
site

The guy who sounds like he had total success running Ubuntu
on Vista is "KevinD" who posted here on Feb 15. KevinD!
Has your good fortune with Ubuntu on VirtualPC running on
Vista held up?
