Vista Home Basic and Home Premium on Virtual PC 2007?

While VHB and VHP are no longer prohibited from virtualization by the EULA
(the restriction applied to any virtualization, not just in VPC) they still
are not supported by Microsoft Product Support Services when run in a vm.
The Addendum did not address support.

Since they are not supported there is also no official statement that they
work. However, the experience of users is that both editions do work as
well in a virtual machine as do the supported editions.

You are still limited to self-support options.

To answer your last question, in general, consumer editions have never been
supported. Based on the discussions here over the years, that has been a
business decision. No technical barriers have ever been cited.

or to run them on multiple VMs with just one license?

I seem to recall a magazine article which gave IIS as the
critical requirement. Whether that was "the ability to run IIS"
or the "service of IIS" I don't know. Was that an error?

I know that last year, Vista Home Basic and Home Premium were not supported
on Virtual PC 2007, either as a host or guest.

In January 2008, Microsoft changed the licence agreement to allow those OSes
to be used in any virtual machine. What I want to know is is there any
documentation from Microsoft that says that Vista Home Basic and Home
Premium will work with Virtual PC 2007 and if so, it's supported?

And lastly, is there any technical reason why it wasn't supported?

OK, I tracked down the article - PCWorld, October, 2007, p.94.
The comments about IIS were actually in relation to VMWare, not
Virtual PC:

"Officially, VMWare Server is supported only under Server versions
of Wondows. But it runs under any Windows OS that has
Microsoft's Internet Information Serfer (IIS) installed, including
Windows Vista."

Do you have any idea why IIS would play a part in virtualization
for VMWare?

No, the change is that you are now legally allowed to run them as guests.
They still aren't supported as either guests or hosts.

No, IIS is only used by Virtual Server not for Virtual PC and even then
only for administration and there are options other than IIS for
administration of VS.
