Hi all,
I have Virtual PC installed on a machine running Windows vistas 32-bit, I
have installed Windows XP pro as a virtual PC, I can connect to the Internet
wirelessly with my vista operating system but when I loaded the Virtual PC I
can only connect if I use an ethernet cable. I think the problem comes from
the Virtual PC not recognizing the USB dongle because if I try to install
drivers for it it doesn't does not recognize the USB dongle and also the
Virtual PC does not recognize a USB flash drive.
Could somebody possibly help me out with this problem as I'm getting
frustrated now, do I need to share the Internet connection from the vista
machine ought only to make a new connection on the Virtual PC??
Many thanks
Mark

Install a Microsoft Loopback Adapter in the host machine and configure
ICS to share your Internet connection to the vm. See the instructions in VPC
help.

Hi Bill
Thank you for your reply I have installed a Microsoft loopback adapter but
when i right click on the loopback adapter in the network connection box and
share this connection it does some think my wireless connection so I cannot
connect to the Internet even from the host PC and still not from the Virtual
PC I have disabled the firewall to roll out this. The loopback adapter is
named network connection 2. Any more help on this would be grateful

,Not sure what I have done but I have uninstalled the loopback adapter I have
not shareing my wireless connection but I can now connect to the Internet
through a host PC and the Virtual machine, the only thing I have done is to
install the updates we don't think includes additions for the Virtual machine
also in the Virtual machine console and the settings, network adapter I have
set it to shared networking maybe this has sorted it for me. one of the quick
question how can i get a USB flash drive to be recognized by the Virtual
machine??

You do not share the loopback adapter - you share the wireless connection.
The loopback adapter is the private side of ICS. The vm will get its network
config from ICS if it is set to get an IP address automatically, Did you
read the help article on ICS?
The Wireless NIC is your Internet connection. If you share it through
ICS the vm can access the Internet through ICS if you set the NIC in the vm
to be in the loopback adapter network. ICS will set the loopback adapter to
192.168.0.1 and the vm should get an IP of 192.168.0.x .

A vm guest cannot see a USB flash drive directly. You might be able to
see it if you share it across the network, but this probably won't work with
Shared Networking (NAT).

Bill,
HELP!
My scenario: DSL conection to Vista host. I have XP on Virtual PC. Can't get
to internet from XP VPC.
What I have done:
- on host Vista: installed MS loopback adapter hardware
- on host Vista > Network connection > LAN connection: disabled Client
chkbox and click Shared tab > allow other users to access.
- on XP VPC > Settings > changed adapter to Loopback adapter
Still doesn't work! What am I missing?
Thanks.

Bill,
What is happeining: when I install Loopback Adapter, I can't connect to the
internet from Vista and morever, Vista refuses to load after restarting!!!
Reason: I have Vista Home Premium and XP pro is in VPC - not supported by
Microsoft, you think?

No, that should not matter. Not supported just means that you cannot expect
email or phone support from MS PSS when you have issues with the software.
It has nothing to do with functionality.

You have a loopback adapter installed on the host and you have linked the
NIC in the vm to the loopback adapter. Then you enabled connection sharing.
That sounds fine.
What about on the vm client? Is it set up to get an IP automatically?
Did you run the network setup wizard and select the option to use the shared
connection?
Check the ipconfig of both host and guest. The loopback adapter should
have 192.168.0.1 . The guest should have 192.168.0.x with a default gateway
of 192.168.0.1 .

In WinXP I just assigend a NIC (one of the two) to the virtual machine... It
worked fine.... Actually, three VM are sharing (at the same time) the same
NIC (wireless) Why does Vista need that loopback adapter?

It is a different setup, and XP also needs the loopback adapter to do it.
What we are talking about is sharing an Internet connection on the host
to a vm. You use basically the same method as you would to share an Internet
connection to a second physical computer. With a physical computer you need
to install a second NIC in the host and and then connect a cable from there
to the second machine's NIC.
With a vm it is a bit simpler. You install a Microsoft Loopback Adapter
in the host and link the NIC in the VM to it. You then enable ICS on the
host for Internet sharing, just as you would with two physical machines.
