Virtual pc sound drivers

I am having trouble getting the sound to work on my virtual pc. It wants a
sound blaster 16 driver, but it is not compatable with a 32 bit system. Any
ideas of what driver to download??

Collin,

I am running Server 2003 Enterprise edition, and the Virtual Machine
additions are installed and updated. The audio service is started.

The host is XP pro w/sp2. It is the virtual machine which is asking for the
Sound Blaster 16 driver.

Any other ideas?

The audio card in the host computer does not matter. What operating system
have you installed in the guest? If it is a supported Windows OS, have you
installed the virtual machine additions? If not, start the virtual machine
and select Install Or Update Virtual Machine Additions from Action Menu at
the top of the vm console window.

Collin,
The sound is enabled (Windows Audio Services) and set to automatic.
Still no sound.

Colin,

I reinstalled the VM adds, and still have no sound in the guest. Device
manager still shows missing sound driver. Thank you for all of your help.

That's because sound is not normally needed in a server. See

in Server 2003 Enterprise.

Paul,

Thanks for the website tip. I will give it a try later today. I am too
tired to concentrate. I will let you know if it works. It will be a great
project for my computer class as well.

So after enabling sound in the W2k3 guest you have sound in the XP host but
not yet the guest? If reinstalling the vm adds does not help I am out of
ideas.

Unfortunately Colin has been kind of leading you around in circles. The
problem you're hitting is quite simple, Windows Server 2003 does not
provide a driver for the Sound Blaster 16 card.

Paul,

Thank you for the website tip!!! I tried the Virtual PC Guy, fix. However,
the wdma_ctl.inf was not on any windows CD. I downloaded it from
infdump.com. I had no problem finding the ctlsb16.sys on the CD. I followed
the directions on the Virtual PC Guy's website. I now have sound on my
Virtual PC Server 2003.
